Another extremely late review from last years Ramaskrik festival. While I like documentaries in general, I don't often prioritize them at festivals. I feel I can get the same experience watching them as home as at a festival, and they're often a bit easier to find too. This time however, the schedule fit just perfectly for me to take a look at
Memory: The Origins of Alien, Alaxandre O. Philippes new documentary about the origin and production of Ridley Scotts masterpiece
Alien. It took a different turn than what I expected. The film focuses a lot on the mythological underpinnings, and the early work and sketches by Dan O'Bannon which lead up to the final script and the movie.
This is definitely a documentary for film enthusiasts, and particularly fans of
Alien. And it's a very good one at that. The depth at which the material is covered is quite remarkable. I absolutely recommend this film, if this seems interesting to you.
Alexandre Phillipe was present at the screening and the festival, and did both an introduction before the screening, and answered questions after it. He has been to Ramaskrik before with
78/52, his documentary about the shower scene in
Psycho. (Which I haven't seen yet.)
