English title: The Conformist
Bernardo Bertolucci is probably better known for his later films, like Last Tango in Paris
(1972) and The Little Emperor
(1987). In his Il Conformista
from 1970 we meet a soft hearted fascist sent out to assasinate his former professor, now an anti-fascist in exile. Combining this with his honeymoon it evolves into a erotic triangle drama with his and his former professors wives. The somewhat absurd story is paired with magnificent cinematography and a rather slow pace and somber atmosphere. It's somewhere between a slow, tragic comedy and a comic tragedy. It ranges from deep and philosofical to a sing and dance number. There's many layers to discover in this film.
