A big insect

Found this little (but rather big) fella out in the garden here one day. Hard to see the proper size from the photo, but I'd say it was about double the size of a normal wasp. Anybody know what this is?

It's actually a wasp or bee at all, but a fly. It's a robberfly (family Asilidae). I can't be sure (and I only have a field guide for UK insects), but given the hairiness it might be the bumblebee robberfly (
Laphria flava
). Hopefully that suggestion will help point your researches in the right direction. It's an ugly thing, that's for sure!

Thanks! I think you are right. It looks quite similar to this one:

Great! Glad I could help. I saw a hornet robberfly a few weeks ago – similar to this one, but orange and even bigger.

No, it was much bigger, and with a longer body. Got a hint from another network that it may be a Bumblebee robberfly (Humlerovflue in Norwegian?)

That must have been an impressive sight. Read up on them after your pointer, and these seem like pretty brutal beasts.

They certainly do. Some of them catch and eat wasps.

A quick followup since I'm not entirely sure who can see what comments here. (The joys of incompatible social networks, and having a system that works with all of them :)
Thanks to @
goobler
(on Diaspora) who pointed me in the right direction. It seems this is a Bumblebee Robberfly (
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laphria_flava
). A more comparable photo here:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Laphria-flava-01.jpg
.
They're predators, feeding on other insects including wasps, dragonflies, spiders and even in cases other robberflies. They can bite if threatened, and it will hurt.
Pretty brutal, but fascinating beasts.

Today we emptied the compost. In case anybody should wonder if there's any nourishment in our compost, we found this crawling life in there:
Too many earthworms to count, but that's a good sign. Here's a few still on the shovel:
Then we opened the other side of the compost bin:
In other news: Seems like our Cayenne is doung quite ok too:

The earthworms don't just live in the compost – they made the compost. They're extraordinary little animals.

Precisely! It's just so cool to see the cycle of life unfolding in front of our very eyes! In a month or two it has turned into new food again!

Life in the Rhubarb...

We have a Rhubarb in our garden, and it's getting quite massive. Also there's a lot of life going on in it. Today I discovered this pretty huge beetle munching along on the flowers:
Also found this little fellow enjoying the blooming rhubarb:
Nearby there was a lot of bumble bees in the hedge, which is just about too bloom. They were quite difficult to photograph, but got a few nice shots. Like this one:

The ants and the maggot
View Profile

Sat, 04 May 2019 20:11:53 +0200
It was a nice day. The weather was warm, the sun was bright, and I had a freshly brewed cup of tea in my hand as I was strolling along the stone path between our house and my work den/studio. Then I notice these ants struggling with something on one of the stones that make up the path. They'd found a maggot. Obviously a nice supply of food, and it looked like they were trying to haul it back to their nest. It was quite fascinating to watch, so I fetched the camera and got these shots.

Forest fire
View Profile

Yesterday lightning struck and caused a forest fire on the hill across the valley from where I live. Today they came and extinguished it with a helicopter. Never seen that happen in real life before. Wish I had a better camera though!
I didn't manage to get the camera ready before they already had gone one round of extinguishing. That's why there's not much smoke left on these images. Still they flew several rounds more, down to the river in the bottom of the valley, between my place and the fire.

Don't think there ever was any danger to any homes or cabins, or they wouldn't have let it burn for that long. Dense forest up there.
